Having Known
Having Known

Receiving the news of cancer is one of the most horrific experiences.  You are told in so many words that you must fight to stay alive.  Well, maybe its different for others, but this is what it was like when I heard from my mother's lips that she was told she had stage-4 breast cancer.  The world ended.  I literally had to drag the truth out of her mouth as she was too broken to tell her youngest girl the news.  Its inconceivably difficult for the family members as the one who was diagnosed is both suffering through the complex routine they are facing and at the same time worried about those around them they care about.  You find yourself praying that you could somehow take even a fraction of their pain upon yourself in order to relieve theirs.  If that was only possible I would have done it every day through the 9 months of fighting this disease with our mother who spent every ounce of her will and energy to stay in this world with her two daughters.

This is why I support.  My mother did not make it through the year of 2013.  Its left a lasting affect upon my sister's and my life and I can truthfully say that I know what others go through in this battle.  Whatever fight you have in you, you have to give it, we have to fight this disease, we have to overcome it.  Not every outcome is what we hope for, but the more we join together, the more we support each other, we can make it through.

The American Cancer Society:  in my experience, lets just say they contribute alot to families. If I even began to go into detail about financial burden during the entire process of treatments this would be a whole lot longer of an intro.  I do like to write, so it'll already be long enough.  However it is no exaggeration.  Just 1 shot for the immune system prior to chemotheropy had a $8,000 price tag attached.  Now multiply that by months of weekly chemo treatments, pre visits, post visits, exams, the previous steps, the following steps... etc etc etc.  Thats not what family needs to be concerned with while holding that hand of their loved one during treatment or while having their hand on their back while post treatment nausea sets in.  Thanks to donors, associations such as the American Cancer Society, and all those who contribute to the cause those who need their time and focus on their family members at such crucial times have places to turn to for support in these other matters.

This is my story, this is what I would tell anyone who asked me what events like this does to help.  This is my experience with cancer.  I cared for my mother by her bedside as she took her last breath, and now I will live and breathe speaking how strong and beautiful of a woman she will always remain to me, as are all the women who fight through breast cancer.  May our efforts continually increase positive outcomes and happy-ending stories for all who are affected.

If you are walking with us on October 19th, or considering to give a donation, or simply know someone going through cancer please remember, cancer isn't a 1 letter word, it's a long 6 letters with stories attached.

Thank You for what you do!

Sincerely,

Becky Kasi Martinson

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
