Why I Wear Pink

Why I Wear Pink and Support the American Cancer Society
Cancer has hit so many members of my family. My grandmothers both had breast cancer, and my father overcame cancer twice now: prostate and colon. We’ve made great progress, but have so far to go to understand what it is that is causing such prevalence. Yes, we can diagnose and treat so much better, but what can we change in our culture, diet, society, environment to prevent cancer in the first place? And how can we leverage these efforts to be kinder and more empathetic to one another?

What are you most excited about being involved in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign?

Last year my friend Matt Liston was part of the event, and I plan to beat him in dollars raised and noise made in every way possible. I love Detroit. I’ve lived here 20 years after leaving Indiana. It’s a city full of hustle and grit and heart, and if I can help raise awareness, have some fun, and celebrate our region, I’m all about it.

I’ve emceed and performed as part of the American Cancer Society cabarets in Canton at Village Theatre the past two years. We raised $15,000 last year and $20,000 this past February. I’m happy to sing and dance and tell a joke or two for a good cause. My dear friend Denise Staffeld is the wunderkind behind those events. I’m so proud of her. I also raise money every year on my birthday for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ann Arbor; I’m a proud board member there as well as of Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit.

About me ...

As Clark Hill's Director of Marketing, I support the firm's marketing, branding, and communications efforts, collaborating with Clark Hill's fantastic attorneys and our exceptional team of marketing and business development professionals.

I have nearly 20 years of experience in marketing, communications, business development, and strategic planning, having worked at Deloitte Consulting, Oakwood Healthcare (now Beaumont), Trott Law (formerly Trott & Trott), St. Joseph Mercy Health System, and Kerr Russell, PLC. I have been heavily involved regionally and nationally in the Legal Marketing Association as a board member, content expert, and presenter. I am serving currently as treasurer for the Legal Marketing Association’s Midwest Regional Board of Directors, and I am the incoming treasurer-elect for the International LMA Board. I was honored to be named a Michigan Lawyers Weekly "Unsung Legal Hero" in 2018.

My Bachelor’s degree is from Wabash College, and I hold an MA in theatre from The Ohio State University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. I am a proud graduate of Leadership Detroit and Leadership A2Y, served as a governor-appointed member of the Michigan Council of Labor and Economic Growth, and was appointed to the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association Board of Governors in 2012.

I have been involved on the following nonprofit boards and committees: First Step, Michigan Quality Council, National MS Society, ASPCA, Wabash College Southeast Michigan Alumni Association, Penny Seats Theatre Company and the Spotlight Players. I currently sit on the boards of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ann Arbor, Royal Starr Film Festival, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, and encoremichigan.com.

And, desperate for validation, I wrote two books Reel Roy Reviews, Volumes 1 and 2.  www.reelroyreviews.com

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
