Why I Wear Pink and Support the American Cancer Society
Cancer has hit so many members of my family. My grandmothers both had breast cancer, and my father overcame cancer twice now: prostate and colon. We’ve made great progress, but have so far to go to understand what it is that is causing such prevalence. Yes, we can diagnose and treat so much better, but what can we change in our culture, diet, society, environment to prevent cancer in the first place? And how can we leverage these efforts to be kinder and more empathetic to one another?
What are you most excited about being involved in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign?
Last year my friend Matt Liston was part of the event, and I plan to beat him in dollars raised and noise made in every way possible. I love Detroit. I’ve lived here 20 years after leaving Indiana. It’s a city full of hustle and grit and heart, and if I can help raise awareness, have some fun, and celebrate our region, I’m all about it.
I’ve emceed and performed as part of the American Cancer Society cabarets in Canton at Village Theatre the past two years. We raised $15,000 last year and $20,000 this past February. I’m happy to sing and dance and tell a joke or two for a good cause. My dear friend Denise Staffeld is the wunderkind behind those events. I’m so proud of her. I also raise money every year on my birthday for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ann Arbor; I’m a proud board member there as well as of Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit.
