Why I Relay

Why I Relay

I always dreamed of having my mom at my wedding, helping me pick the perfect dress, beaming as I walk down the aisle. That dream was shattered at thirteen. I was eating spaghetti that night, laughing with friends and enjoying summer camp, my home away from home. Suddenly, I was ushered away from dinner and handed a phone. On the other end was my father, uncharacteristically emotional, who told me he was going to hand the phone to my mother and for me to tell her how much I loved her, which I did. I had never heard him cry before, and the sound of his voice—shaky and uncertain—sent chills down my spine. Mere moments later, my aunt arrived and confirmed what I suspected but was not ready to hear—that my mother had died shortly after I had spoken to her. I remember falling, crying… Did she even hear me say goodbye? My mom had been so strong in her battle with cancer over the last few years. Arriving at camp just four days earlier and 600 miles from home, I never imagined that she wouldn’t be there to greet me with open arms upon my return. I got in the car with my aunt and drove off, leaving camp—the ultimate place to be a kid—and my childhood behind me. I experienced the most profound loss of my life that day. No longer did I have my mom not for the mundane nor the extraordinary moments of my life. With a working father and three older brothers now away at college, I was largely left to grow up on my own. I shrunk a few sweaters, somehow managed to burn a few pots of mac-and-cheese and progressed through the social and physical challenges of growing into adulthood. I relay so no other little girl has to feel that way ever again.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
