Cancer has affected so many people I know and love that it's inspired me to join Relay for Life. I want to honor survivors and caregivers, remember those we have lost, and offer support to anyone in our community who has been affected by it. This fundraiser is a community-based event, which means no two Relays are the same, but they all support the American Cancer Society's mission.
I was 24 years old when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. I thought my world had come to an end. By the time I started treatments I had two small children that needed me! I could not let them grow up without a mother!!! NO WAY...NO HOW!!! That became my focal point to fight and join the ranks of SURVIVOR! Then in 1998 I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. Treatments and surgery put me back in remission but that did not last too long. In 2000, I found a mass in my abdomen. Back to the doctor to discover that the uterine cancer had spread through the wall and had now taken up residency in several places inside and outside of my abdominal wall. More treatments and surgeries to remove 4 massive tumors. By now, all I could keep doing was asking the Lord "Why?" What had I done in my earlier years that was so bad that I deserved to be this young and now on my third round of cancer? I started living with the motto that what does not kill you only makes you stronger. Sheeesh...I should be Hercules by now! In December of 2015 I was diagnosed with breast cancer again in the other breast. Not the Christmas present I was hoping for!!! Again, treatments and surgery. Then in August of 2019 after my annual physical, I was told........YEP...CANCER IS BACK!!! Cervical cancer this time! SERIOUSLY!?!? Treatment and surgery again! I am happy to report that October 2nd marks my one-year anniversary from that surgery and I am officially a 5 time survivor in total! I consider myself so blessed to still be here and be among the other warriors!
The funds I am raising will provide lifesaving research, free rides to treatments, free places to stay near treatment facilities, and one on one help for people trying to cope with their cancer journey. Believe me, every dollar really does count!
Funds raised support cancer patient programs and groundbreaking research that can help save lives. This event also celebrates over 15.5 million cancer survivors nationwide. 15.5 MILLION. That's huge. That's why I'd love your support. Will you walk with me? And if you can't, would you be so kind as to make a donation?

Your support allows the American Cancer Society to continue:
Fighting cancer in city halls, statehouses, and Congress by elevating the patient voice to advance policy change through the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)
Ensuring no one feels alone at any point on their cancer journey, from prevention to survivorship, and, for some, the end of life.
Investing in breakthrough science to find more - and better - treatments, uncover factors that may cause cancer, and improve patients' quality of life.
Ensuring that all people have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer. ACS and ACS CAN believe all people should have a fair and just opportunity to live a longer, healthier life free from cancer regardless of how much money they make, the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, gender identity, their disability status, or where they live.
Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who's overcome it.
Thank you for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.
Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
