The Hummingbirds
Hi, I am Amy Horton and I appreciate you visiting The Hummingbirds' Relay For Life Page. Please read on to learn more about why I Relay and consider supporting my efforts, either through a donation or by joining my team! The Hummingbirds I created The Hummingbirds to honor mymom, Janet K. Horton, who died of colon cancer at the age of 54. Janetadored hummingbirds; she was fascinated at their speed and tiny wings, their bright and vivid colors, and their astounding annual migration patterns. Did you know that these tiny birds can travel well over a thousand miles every year? Janet was a lot like a hummingbird; full of beauty, spirit, strength, and resilience. Those similarities and her passion inspired our team name: The Hummingbirds. Our Story Less than two months after I graduated college, mymom was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. She received chemo for a few months, but her cancer was too agressive. After eight months of knowingly battling cancer, I lost my mom on March 15, 2011. Three years later, the first year I was Captaining The Hummingbirds, my paternal grandmother, Laura Horton, passed away from her third cancer diagnosis. My grandmother also loved hummingbirds, so I dedicate this team in her honor as well. Cancer has taken so much from . But I refuse to remain hopeless. I joined Relay to Fight Back against this horrible disease and to Remember and Honor my loved ones. Hope Lodge: A Personal Connection I know firsthand how gracious the American Cancer Society (ACS) is to families who are fighting cancer. My mom received her weekly chemo treatment approximately two hours away from home. Instead of paying for hotel rooms every week, my family was able to stay at an ACS Hope Lodge. It couldn’t have been more convenient; the hospital was across the street from Hope Lodge and the beautiful, new, private accommodations were free. But Hope Lodge was more than that… A cancer diagnosis can be an isolating experience. That’s what makes Hope Lodge truly special; it’s a place where families foster connections with other families who know exactly what you’re going through. In our time at Hope Lodge, my parents became close friends with another couple who was staying there. After my mom passed, this couple drove over four hours to attend her funeral and support our family. That comradery, support, understanding, and bond isn’t found in a hotel. Join Me! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my family’s story. I hope you will consider joining my team or making a donation in support of my efforts to Finish the Fight! Best, Amy Horton Team Captain, The Hummingbirds

Thank you for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.
Since 1991 we have invested $3.43 billion in cancer research.
We have received over 360,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2023.
Cancer patients benefited from the ACS transportation support through our Road To Recovery program and transportation grants in 2023, with nearly 769,000 rides provided.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.

This isn’t what I wanted.
Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.
Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
