When asked, almost all of us can say that we know someone who has been touched by cancer (the statistics are 1 out of every 2 men and 1 out of every 3 women). The statistics bear this out: more than 600,000 people from across the United States and more than 6,300 Iowans died from cancer in 2022; over 1.9 million people in the United States and more than 20,000 of people in Iowa first heard the dreaded words “You have cancer” in the past 12 months, I am not a doctor or a research scientist so that the only way I can actually do something about the human side of these numbers is through volunteering for and financially supporting the work of the American Cancer Society. Helping fund the research and education programs of the American Cancer Society is a tangible way to save lives and prevent deaths from cancer. The American Cancer Society continues to be the largest source of private cancer research funding in the United States. The clear, evidence-based information on cancer diagnosis and treatment is available to everyone at no cost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people dealing with cancer or their families or friends or caregivers can dial 1-800-ACS-2345 any time of the day or night and reach a trained social worker who can respond to their questions or just be a friendly, supportive voice. The decline in cancer mortality rates for the past several years has been significant and is due, in no small part, to the education and research work of the American Cancer Society to reach its vision to “end cancer as we know it, for everyone.” I am taking a different path this year, so to speak. Rather than walking the track at Washington High School, this year I will be walking from Prairie High School to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Iowa City on Saturday, June 17, to celebrate those who are living with cancer and to give tribute to those who have succumbed to this horrible disease. I will also be celebrating my wife’s 16 years of survivorship and my 6 years. The Hope Lodge provides free lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers while undergoing treatment at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. I will be dedicating 10% of the funds I raise to support this important resource. |

Your support allows the American Cancer Society to continue:
Fighting cancer in city halls, statehouses, and Congress by elevating the patient voice to advance policy change through the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)
Ensuring no one feels alone at any point on their cancer journey, from prevention to survivorship, and, for some, the end of life.
Investing in breakthrough science to find more - and better - treatments, uncover factors that may cause cancer, and improve patients' quality of life.
Ensuring that all people have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer. ACS and ACS CAN believe all people should have a fair and just opportunity to live a longer, healthier life free from cancer regardless of how much money they make, the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, gender identity, their disability status, or where they live.
Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who's overcome it.
Thank you for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.

This isn’t what I wanted.
Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.
Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
