It's difficult to describe what it is like when you hear the news. At first you can't believe it is real. How could this happen to someone I care about so much. Then comes the anger, the depression, the uncertainty. It's heartbreaking watching someone you love be diagnosed with breast cancer - like our mother was in 2008.

But once you are past the heavy emotions, you ask yourself what can we do next. What networks are out there for support? What doctors can provide the best treatment? How are we fight this disease and win? Even when we were all scared, our mother knew from the beginning that she was going to fight.

It wasn't easy. There were hard days and hard nights. But there was also an outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and even those who we hadn't been as close with before. Now, 16 years later, she is cancer free. We were fortunate for the doctors who treated her, the advocacy and community organizations who supported our family, and the researchers who continued working on the cure.

We want to help the American Cancer Society save lives and end breast cancer forever. We're taking our first step towards a world without breast cancer by raising funds to stop this disease that affects 1 in 8 women during their lifetime.
