Strides RewardsKathleen Burkitt-Velez/ Tricia
Breast cancer has affected too many people I love. That's why I've joined Making Strides Against Breast Cancer to honor survivors and thrivers, remember those we've lost, and offer support to anyone in our community who's been affected by it. Together we will make a difference in the fight to end breast cancer. Making Strides is not only our opportunity to join our community to fight back against breast cancer, but it is also a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease. Our team is fundraising for the American Cancer Society's support services and lifesaving research. We are participating in memory and honor of Kathleen Burkitt Velez known to her friends and family as Kas. As many of you already know, fundraising to find a cure for cancer was her passion in life but paramount was her family. Cancer had inflicted so many of her family members as well as her friends. Kas and her siblings were very young when they lost their mother to ovarian cancer when their mom was just 42. Their Aunts would also pass too young from breast cancer. Not really, knowing why or what was happening- they drew closer as a family and grew up starting their own families. Later in life, this disease came at them again losing their sister Barbara who was taken by the same disease as their Mom. Their cousin Monica was also taken by cancer. Their nephew Christopher diagnosed at the age of seven with lymphoma, but I am proud to say he is a healthy cancer free young man today. Kas’s sister Mary-Ann diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago is not only a cancer survivor, but continues this walk each and every year in support of finding a cure. Funds raised at events like Making Strides allow many families options unlike when their Mom who was sick in 1969. In 1969, there were no walks, no resources and no support groups the word cancer was whispered as if someone may catch it. Today with the advances in medicine, we now have the opportunities to be screened and tested. Early detection is the key to facing our risks and make life changing choices. Kas was a pre-vivor as well as her sister Maureen and her niece of whom is an amazing healthy young woman that is the proud mother of two beautiful little girls. If you are not sure what that means, these are courageous & pioneering women that made incredibly hard decisions after receiving the news that they were predisposed to certain cancers and underwent surgery and reconstruction to reduce their risk forever getting these cancers. Kas’s sister and niece did this before it was headline news and before we secured the right to do so without being dropped by insurance. Discriminated in the workplace, while this is a choice no woman should have to face it is an option that was not available in their Mother’s time and thanks to awareness and legislation, it is saving lives. Kas’s sisters have reached ages not seen by women in their family in two generations and that is directly attributed to the research & work done with the funds raised at the ACS Making Strides events. Kas’s knowledge, family experiences and passion for Cancer awareness helped save my life also. Yes, I too am a cancer survivor diagnosed after giving birth to my daughter 14 years ago. Once diagnosed I was devastated by the news, but my friend Kas took the lead. Kas selected my doctors for surgery, radiation and chemotherapy based on her infinite knowledge of amazing doctor’s, research by organizations such as ACS and the Making Strides event. Because of Kas, this year I will celebrate 14 years of being cancer free. In years past, cancer was the disease that inflicted few and you knew someone, who knew someone that had cancer. Unfortunately, those times are now of the past. Today everyone knows someone that had it (Me), knows someone that is fighting for his or her life or knew someone that had succumb to it. Why I Support the American Cancer Society Kas’ mission to do her part to move science forward to help others to ultimately find the cure and to provide options and choices for those of us who are facing the risk and battling the disease and she believed this was possible by supporting the American Cancer Society and specifically the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Kas was incredibly proud of her employer Canon USA for becoming a flagship sponsor of this event and each year she was an enthusiastic Team Captain. She rallied her co-workers, her family and friends to participate in the event each year the awareness grew and so did her hopes So if you are looking for inspiration to participate, remember that these funds are helping people live longer and giving hope to families like ours. This will be the seventh event without Kas to lead us, but we will honor her by continuing to fight, to raise money and awareness. We can end this cycle and have pink become just a color. Join us and together we will walk for a world without breast cancer! Every dollar really does count and will sustain critical research providing services for people trying to cope with their breast cancer experience. So we're asking for your help. Please donate or join our team today, because together we can end breast cancer. Thank you,
Team Kas/Tricia

Thank you for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.
As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.
We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021
Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer.

Strides RewardsThis isn’t what I wanted.
Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.
There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.
How We Support the American Cancer Society
Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
