Welcome to My Personal Page

My cancer journey would look very different if it weren't for my friends at American Cancer Society.

This organization truly understands the needs of our community and the families effected by breast cancer.  They not only support research with local providers, but also provide assistance and education to patients and their caregivers.  Representing my company as a team captain is my way of giving back to my family at ACS and showing my appreciation.

~"You don't know what you don't know"~

Diagnosed just over 6 years ago, I was immediately overwhelmed with questions - and I work in healthcare!  The term "you don't know what you don't know" became a common term in my new world.  A few pieces of advice from my journey:

~ Assemble your own personal army to help navigate through the unknown - ACS was one of the first calls I made.  From helping me understand my cancer type and treatment options to support and nutritional needs; ACS was there for me.  They helped me feel comfortable in asking for help and encouraged me through tough situations.

~ Get second opinions from medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast surgery,  and plastic surgery.  Do not be afraid to do so -  a great provider will always welcome this.   You have a right to choose your doctors.   A second opinion is not only about the treatment plan, but the relationship you have with the provider.   Your medical oncologist with be your coach through the years - trust is key.  Check ratings and comments, and ensure breast cancer/surgery is their specialty....you wouldn't go to a neurologist for a colonoscopy, would you?!  :)

~ Know your resources.   ACS (cancer.org) has links for cancer education, coping, survivorship, financial and insurance, as well as ways to connect with other survivors.   Social workers  are a wealth of knowledge and have an inate kindness and compassion for patients.  Most cancer centers will have a social worker and I highly recommend meeting with them. There are also amazing non-profits that provide support groups and programs... Epic Experience, Imermans Angels, Stupid Cancer are just a few!

~ Survivorship is still part of your journey.  Continue self-care and give back when possible.  Although "I'm through my treatment", I will forever be a survivor.  With that comes caring for my body, continuing to do self-checks, mental health care, and self-advocacy.  Don't let cancer own you, instead use it to empower you.

Cancer did not beat me and does not define me; but because of cancer I am now better at my job, I have eliminated negative from my life, I have dedicated time to help others, and (most importantly,) I have a deeper relationship with my husband and loved ones.

I support Making Strides for what they taught me and how they helped me.  Why will you support the cause?

I'm supporting the American Cancer Society and you can, too!

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
