Strides RewardsTom Wong- 5th Annual Paddle for a Cure, Napa, CA 10-12-24
Mahalo for joining our team!My wife Danna and I started Paddle for a Cure in 2018 when she was diagnosed with Infiltrating Lobular Breast Cancer, ILC. Little did we know that 3 short years later, I would hear that same dreaded "C" word. when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Both of us are happy and healthy today, and don't take one moment for granted.. we know we are 2 of the lucky ones. Below is the message I shared back in 2018 when Danna was first diagnosed. Again, thank you for joining us in supporting the American Cancer Society!
I would like to reach out and share a story... “Cancer” As some of you may know, I'm a big supporter of the cure for cancer. I’m no different than many out there, but it's time I share my story. When I was 2 years old, I lost my mother to a battle with cancer. While growing up, I never missed a chance to ask my Dad and Aunties (her sisters), to tell me anything about my mom. They would share wonderful stories and tried their best to help me connect to the mother I never had the chance to know. Many years later while working at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, my Aunty came to visit me and shared the words I never expected to hear... she too was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I was crushed. I left home and came to the Bay Area to work at the Culinary Institute of America. No sooner had I begun this new chapter in my life, my brother got cancer. He battled.. and beat it. We are all so grateful that he remains cancer-free. TodayLaying in bed this morning, I connected with my Dad in a way I never wanted to..now I know how my Dad felt all those years ago. My beautiful wife, mother of our children, soul mate, my best friend, my lover, Danna Wong.... has Breast Cancer. We feel so blessed today with the advancements in science and medicine and the “Team” of incredible doctors we have, and we KNOW that she too, like my brother, will battle and beat this terrible disease. Our EventThere are a few things that have carried us through many ups and downs in life, one being the support of our family and friends. Paddling also has been and continues to be a big part of our lives. Being on the water is a healing place for us both. So we decided to put these supports together, and created an event, "Paddle for a Cure". Now more than ever, we are motivated to give and help make a difference through the American Cancer Society. No matter how small, our contribution will be mighty! Please consider joining our team... an event for people that share our same love for paddling, one another, and hope to find a cure for Cancer!!

Thank you for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.
As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.
We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021
Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer.

Strides RewardsThis isn’t what I wanted.
Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.
There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.
How We Support the American Cancer Society
Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
