The Lower Girls

WHY AM I WALKING

My mom Janet is a 26-year survivor and is a wonderfully active healthy person today. Go Mom!!!

I also walk to honor my sister Jennifer. She is an 16-year survivor who showed such strength in facing breast cancer in 2008, then in losing her husband in 2013, and she continued to show that strength in fighting a recurrence in 2014. She lives all the way across the country but continues to show such resilience - it humbles me.

June 25th marks 15 years since my diagnosis in 2009 at the age of 39. It is more of a dream every year that I underwent a double mastectomy, endured 6 months of chemo and finished my reconstruction in 2011.

Since 2011, my cousin Becky is a survivor and I have multiple friends and co-workers that have joined the survivor ranks. Although the number of diagnoses keep going up, the survival rate is going up as well, and it is so good to have each other's support through all this crap!

This is my 18th year walking with family and friends. I was so honored to share my story at the kickoff breakfast in 2010 and have made great friends through the Pacesetter network! I truly love this walk and the people involved with it. They do great work with the funds that we raise. In 2018, I walked with Larry who lost his lovely Lisa to breast cancer - it was so great to get to walk with him. In 2020, we walked four miles in our neighborhood due to Covid-19. In 2021, we walked at Balboa Park wearing masks and staying safe. In 2022, I couldn't walk because I got Covid-19 just days before the walk so cheered on teammate Kari who walked for us all. In 2024, we have a new location - can't wait to check it out!

I can't wait to walk and celebrate again the fact that early detection has allowed my family to continue to live their lives with their families for many years to come. But we need to keep working on better treatments - no one should have to go through surgeries or chemo or radiation. We need to keep funding research!

Please join me in the walk or make a donation if you can. Every donation, no matter the size, would really help!

Thank you for reading and caring about my family (the Lower Girls) and my friends and their future. Because of people like you, we have a bright future!

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
