Why I Relay

My mother, Carrie Carney, died of pancreatic cancer on August 15, 2010. Mom had beaten breast cancer earlier in her life, and my father has had several skin cancers, and both of them were past participants in the survivor lap at Relay. I know first-hand about the work the American Cancer Society does, and why it is important.

In 2011, the church of which I'm a member, First United Methodist in Shelbyville, Tenn., had its first-ever Relay team, and I was part of it, my first experience with the Relay. I had a great time, and I was thrilled a few months later when I was asked to serve as event promotion chair and join the planning committee for the 2012 Bedford County event. I've continued in that role ever since.

I would be honored if you would give toward my participation in honor of my mother.

HOW FUNDRAISING IMPACTS YOUR COMMUNITY

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
