Fighting Cancer to the Coast

Ravens in the Hood

Ravens in the Hood is a group of 12 high school students committed to raising money for cancer research.  The team was formed in 2012 with the hope that if they raised enough money, they could have one of the American Cancer Society’s Hood to Coast Relay entries.  That year, they organized the 1st Annual Running Over Cancer 5K (ROC5K). It was a huge success. More than 200 people came out, and the team raised over $8,000 for the American Cancer Society. With growing support, the group did it again the next year. It was an even greater success with more participants and even more money raised for cancer research, cancer patient and family support, and education and prevention.

Now, it has become an annual tradition passed down to other Ravenscroft students that are just as passionate in the fight against cancer.  By raising these funds and committing to give all of our fundraising dollars to the American Cancer Society, our team has the opportunity to participate in the Hood to Coast Relay from the peak of Mt. Hood in Oregon all the way to the Oregon coast this August.  We will each run three legs over the course of about 30 hours, and in the end, we will have completed this 199-mile “Mother of All Relays.”

Last year, the Ravens in the Hood Team raised over $126,000 for the American Cancer Society.  To date, we have raised well over $1,000,000!

We invite you to join us this year to help us support the work of the American Cancer Society.  By donating, you will be a part of the story of success for our team, and more importantly, you will be helping the American Cancer Society to continue its incredible mission.

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $400 M for potentially lifesaving cancer research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
