Long Beach Marathon

Boswell DetermiNation

Welcome to the Boswell DetermiNation team page!

Many of you know we started running as a family two years ago with WeROCK. It's been amazing experience both individually and as a family. Together we've finished two full marathons, two 22-mile mind-grinds, two 32Ks, four half marathons and countless other long runs.

In less than three weeks, we will be running in two races on the same weekend! First up, on Saturday, October 5th, we'll be running the Aquarium of the Pacific 5K with the WeROCK team. Then, on Sunday, October 6th, we'll be running the Long Beach Half Marathon with the American Cancer Society as Boswell DetermiNation.

We know it’ll put our endurance to the test, especially since we didn’t train properly, but we’ll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others. We’ve already donated $1,200 of our own money, which Elevance Health (fka Anthem) matched so we’re well on our way to meeting our goal of raising $3,200!

Every dollar really does count, so if you’re able to, please donate today. The funds we’re raising will sustain critical research and provide services for people trying to cope with their cancer experience.

From Tammy:

Hearing the words “You have cancer” is life changing.

I heard those words myself in March 2015 when my doctor told me I had Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), the earliest form of breast cancer. With DCIS, the cancer cells are contained in the milk ducts of the breast but have not spread into surrounding breast tissue.

I was lucky. Although I ultimately had to undergo a bilateral mastectomy with a complicated reconstruction called DIEP flap surgery, my outcome was good. My “cancer journey” was over quickly and I didn’t have to endure chemo or radiation. Not everyone is so fortunate.

Since I was first diagnosed almost 10 years ago, several friends have also been diagnosed with breast cancer. Other friends and close relatives have been diagnosed with other kinds of cancer including colon cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, ovarian cancer, leukemia and other rare kinds of cancer such as Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and Myxoid Fibroinflammatory Sarcoma. Their worlds were turned upside down and although many of them survived, not all of them did.

I know cancer has also affected someone you know and love…maybe even you. Together, we can make a big difference in the fight against cancer.

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Any donation amount helps save lives from breast cancer.

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
