Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run

David April Beer Runners

I first participated in DNation in 2010 through the Philly Tri.  Over the years I served as Co-Chair of the DetermiNation Philadelphia Committee and had the chance to meet incredible people.

In 2023, I lost two of those people.  First, my friend I met training for my first triathlon, Isabella De La Houssaye.  She bravely battled Stage 4 lung cancer for year and managed to complete multiple Ironman events during that time, including the Ironman World Championships of which I was in-person to support.

Only a few days after she passed, I learned about the loss of David April.  Over the years I was able to support him during his races for DNation and late this summer I just happened to be on a plane sitting next to him from Madrid to Philadelphia - which was canceled and rescheduled, allowing us to have a wonderful dinner together with his loving wife.

The next morning I fought back tears on my run in Retiro park, knowing we should be running together and fearful it would be the last time I saw him...and it was.

The two strongest fighters I know are now gone, and it's cancer that took them, and so it's time to fight back, again.

So to the man who brought us, "To the professor!" I say, "To David!"

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $400 M for potentially lifesaving cancer research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
