RunDisney Villains Take Chicago

You may be wondering why we are called the Villains so I thought I would provide a little bit of background.

If you are familiar with RunDisney races, you may be familiar with the DLS crew, or Dead Last Start. This is a term we give ourselves as athletes who intentionally start a Disney race, or any race now (some of us have done it at Tokyo and Chicago as well as other races), at the back of the pack, meaning, we start dead last.

Anyone who does this is given the villain title. I'll be honest, the title originated from some people who felt we did this as an effort to "show off" or "one up" our fellow athletes. This is not the case. Many of us do this as a personal challenge, to overcome fears of course time restrictions or in alot of cases, raise money for charity. But we own the title proudly.

Despite the name, we are far from villainous. As a collective group we have raised money to replace a running chair a fellow athlete lost in Hurricane Helene, raised tens of thousands of dollars across multiple charities and helped bring awareness and fundraise for an organ donation nonprofit after a fellow team member and back of the packer, Heather, lost her son and made the brave decision to have her sons organs donated to save anothers life.

And we are looking to do this once more in the fight against cancer. We are looking to defy the odds and raise almost $200,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The money our team raises helps the American Cancer Society in so many ways. It's helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It's providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $400 M for potentially lifesaving cancer research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
