Thank you for your support in my efforts to raise funds. All of you who know me are aware of my passion to make a difference in this fight against breast cancer and I can not do this alone.

My life as I knew it changed on August 4th, 2008. After a routine mammogram on 7/22/08, a second mammogram was requested for 7/05/08 and then a biopsy on August 1st, 2008. My OBGYN contacted me by phone informing me that I had been diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ Stage I breast cancer. My doctor said I had little to worry about and that it was the least invasive type of breast cancer. Truly the only word I heard at that time was “cancer”. After much research, and a recommendation from my primary care doctor, we decided on St. John’s Mercy. I made an appointment with a breast surgeon and after an initial exam and reviewing my test she arranged for me to have a lumpectomy on my right breast. After surgery, I was sent to the radiologist to start treatment. My radiation was completed on October 22, ‘08. After that, I began the drug Tamoxifen, an oral chemotherpy, and continued that for the next five years. Life after diagnosis was more precious, and I was so greatfull for every moment that I had lived. The support of my husband and family was incredible. I look back and see that my husband suffered too through all of that, and I am so thankful for him.

Five years after my diagnosis I received a call from my youngest son, he had been diagnosed with colon cancer. This was more devastating to me than my own diagnosis. I would have taken all of the fear and pain away from him if I could have found a way. Because of what I had experienced, I felt I had a deeper understanding and compassion for what he was going through that I might not have had before my diagnosis. He has now been cancer free for five years.

I am so excited to share my story because I believe that cancer, although it changed my life and has taken so much from me, it has also lead me to the most rewarding, gratifying, and enriching time in my life. I have been able to help hundreds of women going through cancer treatment through various programs and workshops that I have been apart of. But the lives that I have touched cannot compare to what these women have taught me. I am blessed, my heart is so full of graditude.

Why I Support the American Cancer Society

Every day, the American Cancer Society helps people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early when it is easiest to treat. They provide free information and services when and where people need it throughout their journey to get well. They are investing in innovative research to find, prevent, and treat breast cancer.

I have signed up to walk and fundraise for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. I hope you will consider joining my team and/or making a donation in support of my efforts.

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
