Making Strides of Phoenix Presented by BD

Still Goin' Strong

Breast cancer research support has been in my blood for years.  It was many years ago that my mother-in-law, Ann, walked her first 3-day, 60 mile walk in Phoenix.  She walked in memory of Sheri, her sister-in-law, who passed away from breast cancer.  I will never forget how inspired I was by Ann’s dedication to the cause and I thank her for opening everyone’s eyes to this disease (always in Sheri’s honor).

I never met Sheri, but have heard many stories about her through both Tim, Ann and TJ.  The 3-day walk became an annual family tradition with Ann walking every year and TJ, Jess, and Cathy joining her when they lost touch with common sense:).  I never walked, but was always cheering them on, along with fellow cheerleaders, GiGi, Tim, Rylin, Milla, Teagan, Cathy, Laura, Marge, Sean, Megan, some weird duck, Cracker (!!), Mac, Shelley, Bailey, Shelby, the bra wearing Brendan, and so many more!!  I truly enjoyed the memories from those 3-day walks and enjoyed these opportunities to become closer with TJ’s family.

Those 3-day walks ended in Phoenix, but my immediate family always made it a point to participate in at least one breast cancer fundraising event every year thereafter.  Plus we had to put all that pink gear to use:).

In 2018, TJ, Rylin, Abe, and I joined TJ’s work team in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk.  It was during that walk that I was reminded that I should go in for a mammogram.  I never imagined that I would be diagnosed with the disease until it happened last year (at age 41).  After 2 surgeries and a month of radiation treatments, I am happy to say that I am cancer free:)!!  Thanks to all my family and friends for their support over the past year with a special shout out to TJ and my mom.  Thanks for helping me get through a rough year!  I would love for anyone to join our team to walk on Oct 26th or donate to the cause.

Although I cringe at the thought of sharing my business (i.e. no Facebook or social media), I know it’s important for those young women in my family to know of any family history (or just realize it can happen to anyone).  Milla, Teagan, and Rylin held a sign at one of those 3-day walks years ago that read, “Find a cure before we mature!!”.  It’s crazy how close to home those words hit me now!!

Now here’s the boring impersonal stuff...

Welcome to our Team Page. We\'ve formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It\'s helping fund innovative research. It\'s providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It\'s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we\'re out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
