Making Strides of San Francisco Bay Area

Paddle for a Cure 2nd Annual

SATELLITE  EVENT ~ PADDLE FOR A CURE - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19TH

Aloha All,

Once again we are approaching the fall season and have news to share with you.  The news came with my annual health check-up and bloodwork... I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I'm currently at Stage 1 and will hopefully stay there for years to come. I trust and respect my doctor and am under 'Active Surveillance' every 3 months from now on. I share this with all of you not for my own attention, but with the hopes that I can inspire all of you to NOT SKIP your Yearly Check-Ups. Had I not caught this early, my prognosis wouldn't have been as encouraging as it is.

We are now upon the one year anniversary of my wife, Danna's diagnosis of breast cancer. Lobular to be exact...a sneaky type that is very difficult to detect. We are so happy to share that with all of your outpouring of love, prayers, words, support, donations, AND paddling... today Danna is NES, or having No Evidence of Disease. Anyone with cancer will understand that you can never really say, you are "Cancer-free".

Our goals with this 2nd Annual Paddle for a Cure is to provide an opportunity for all of us to come together and share our love of the water, to raise awareness around cancer, and to raise funds to donate to American Cancer Society. We continue to feel deeply for those who don't have the love and support that we do, and feel that by raising some money we can share in the work that ACS is doing to help others.

Thank you all again for everything you've done for Danna and myself, and we truly hope to see you all soon for a good-fun paddle!

See you on 10/19/19!!

How We Support the American Cancer Society

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It's helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It's providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people

who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause!

Aloha All,

I would like to reach out and share a story...  “Cancer”

As some of you may know, I'm a big supporter for the cure for cancer.  I’m no different that many out there, but it's time I share my story.

When I was 2 years old, I lost my mother to a battle with cancer.

While growing up, I never missed a chance to ask my Dad and Aunties (her sisters), to tell me anything about about my mom. They would share wonderful stories , and tried their best to help me connect to the mother I never had the chance to know.

Many years later while working at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, my Aunty came to visit me and shared the words I never expected to hear... she too was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I was crushed.

I left home and came to the Bay Area to work at the Cuilinary Institute of America. No sooner had I begun this new chapter in my life, my brother got cancer. He battled.. and beat it. We are all so grateful that he remains cancer free.

Today

Laying in bed this morning, I connected with my Dad in a way I never wanted to..now I know how my Dad felt all those years ago.

My beautiful wife, mother of our children, soul mate, by best friend, my lover, Danna Wong.... has Breast Cancer.

We feel so blessed today with the advancements in science and medicine, and the “Team” of incredible doctors we have, and we KNOW that she too, like my brother, will battle and beat this terrible disease.

Our Event

There are a few things that have carried us through many ups and down in life, one being the support of our family and friends. Paddling also has been, and continues to be a big part of our lives. Being on the water is a healing place for us both. So we decided to put these supports together, and created and event, "Paddle for a Cure".

Now more than ever, we are motivated to give and help make a difference through the American Cancer Society. No matter how small, our contribution will be mighty!

Please consider joining our team... an event for people that share our same love for paddling, one another, and a hope to find a cure for Cancer!!

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
