Why I am Making Strides

Welcome to our Team Page! IRISH STRONG!

Dear Colleagues, Friends & Family:

I would like to invite you to donate to TEAM IRISH STRONG for the MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK which will be done virtually on Sunday, October 18th.

As many of you know, I am a two -time breast cancer survivor.  I have metastatic, triple negative breast cancer and am blessed to be in remission.  Miraculously, my last chemotherapy treatment was in April 2017 and my last immunotherapy treatment was in May 2016, and my regular scans continue to be good!

My cancer journey sadly started in February 2014.

I will never forget that terrible afternoon when I was attending my son’s science fair and my doctor called and suggested I go someplace quiet so she could talk to me. She told me that I had breast cancer and, at that moment, I began my fight - going through a mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments. The loss of my hair was one of the most difficult and emotional challenges as it became clear to the world that I had cancer.   I was cancer free...until December 2015. My type of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer, doesn’t respond to hormone therapy and often recurs. In December 2015, a CT scan showed that my cancer had metastasized to my liver. I have been told that metastatic breast cancer is not curable but is treatable. Those are very hard words to hear! I have endured various treatments over the last 2 1/2 years including chemotherapy and an immunotherapy trial drug, as well as medications to help with the side effects. It is a relentless battle.

In early May 2017, my side effects from treatment were so significant that I needed to take a break from treatment.   As I write this message, I feel GREAT and me and my family have been able to enjoy life again. Now - I want to take advantage of my “good health” to walk with YOU to raise funds to END this horrific disease.

I am richly blessed with friends and family and a deep support team.  Not a day goes by where we don’t acknowledge how very blessed we are!  I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge my employer, WPI, my boss, my coworkers and the WPI community as a whole for their unwavering support as I battle this disease.

My faith, family, friends, and a little luck of the Irish have gotten me through to this point. My journey is not over. I know how quickly this tide of good fortune can turn. So please join me in taking advantage of my “good health” and good fortune at this point and let's raise money to help put an end to this dreaded disease! Enough! Aren’t we all so weary with hearing of how many families are affected by breast cancer?! Join me in this walk to do our part so that some day someone we care for will not have to suffer and worry the way so many of us have.

Join me and team Irish Strong to find treatments and hopefully a cure so that others can enjoy a quality life  worth living!

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
