Making Strides of Boston

Gail's Kicking Cancer's A** Team

This is the 30th anniversary of Making Strides!  And so we are all in this year "Making Strides" for Gail - and for all the women in her shoes.

As soon as she was diagnosed, Gail knew this was bigger than her. She knew that her calling had become two-fold: being a mom and working to help other women beat breast cancer. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer resonated with her immediately because of the power in numbers and the power in research dollars.

Gail got a tremendous bump in positive energy from our large and wonderful team of walkers every year. She also felt the power of the 35,000 other walkers. That was such positive fuel for her personal battle with cancer. She lived better and longer because of it. And so we ask you to join our team and come walk with us for all those other women who need that energy during this crisis in their lives. It is such a beautiful event!

Like in past years we'll meet at 8:30 am at the southeast corner of Charles Street and Beacon Street (which is at the edge of Boston Common Park) - this is just north of Boston Common Parking Garage (which has reasonable rates) and across the street from the Starbucks. We'll be the sea of aqua-blue T-shirts (bring your shirt from prior years if you have it).

The year after our first Walk Gail spoke at an event and described the Walk in this way:

"For me, a survivor, seeing all those people walking was amazing and humbling. I cried a few times that day, when I'd see a memorial t-shirt or sign with the name and picture of a beautiful mother/daughter/wife/sister/friend who lost her battle. Every smile at me or person cheering as I walked with my pink survivor sash on gave me strength and energy. Today I know there's a woman sitting in her doctor's office getting the news that will change her life forever and I want to help her, I need to help her and I need you to help both of us. Please walk, please help raise money so that we can find a cure. Women in this fight need your help, they need resources, they need the American Cancer Society and I think they deserve it."

If you can't make the trip to Boston on Sunday September 25 and this cause resonates with you, consider donating directly to Sophie or Tom (rather than donating to the general team - this helps us become "Pacesetters" which is one of our goals).

This is our 13th year participating in Making Strides (and 8th without Gail).  To expand our impact, please forward this page on to a few people. Or better yet, come join our team and encourage a few friends to donate directly to you!

Hope to see you soon!

love,

tom and sophie

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
