Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Indian River County 2022

It’s hard to imagine another year has passed and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event (MSABC) is just around the corner. First and foremost, I am thrilled to share with you that I continue to be cancer-free! As I do each year, I have been thinking about the theme of my communication to share with you, my amazing support team.  While 2022 has had her challenges, she has also blessed me with the opportunity to grow and “level-up” in ways I had not anticipated. I was reminded by my sister and Life Coach, Suzi, to embrace my warrior self. It is what I did when diagnosed with cancer and is exactly what I continue to do each and every day.

When originally diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1998, my daughters were 8 and 3 years old.  The fact that this “dis ease” could end my life became a reality that I had never before given any thought. What did I want more than anything? What did I pray for? What was my ask?  Please let me get heathy. Please let me survivor this diagnosis. Please above all PLEASE let me be a mom to my daughters and have the opportunity to be the BEST mom ever, to watch them grow and teach them well into adulthood. When diagnosed the second time in 2000, I recognized that in addition to being the BEST mom ever, it was imperative that I identify myself as a Survivor; something I had not yet done. Additionally, I recognized the importance of sharing my story and becoming a light and support for other individuals dealing with breast cancer. If I could make a difference for even ONE person, I would be achieving my goal.  I am in my 25th year of survivorship! I am the mom of Kyra age 32 and Julia age 27. I am an avid fundraiser for MSABC (actually, the #1 team in Indian River County for the second year in a row). I have been a volunteer for many years and this year was asked to be the Survivor Chair- a position I am proud to hold as I support this mission so near and dear to my heart and soul.

On all levels: PRAYERS ANSWERED!!!

I feel so blessed and deeply embrace the amazing relationships I share with Kyra and Julia. My babies are now 32 and 27 years old. We are not only mother and daughter(s), but we are also friends and confidants.

In February, Julia and I attended a Yoga retreat in Belize. One of her clients gifted her the trip and she asked me (YES ME her MOTHER!!!) to join her. It was an amazing and epic experience.

In July, I made a spontaneous trip to NY as I was invited to spend Julia’s 27th birthday with her and her posse! I ended up hanging out with her for 2 weeks. It was AWESOME. We spent quality time doing chores, organizing her (and Greg’s) home, cleaning, clearing, donating, eating, laughing, and growing. Again, an amazing and epic experience.

I no sooner got home when Kyra and I connected, and she wanted to talk about when I would come to Tahoe for a Kyra/mommy hang out. Due to her work schedule, we decided to plan the trip for mid-September. AND…I will be there one week from today! Excited does not even begin to describe the emotions I am feeling. She asked me to come…to spend quality mother-daughter time. We have started our list of things to accomplish. A “working” vacation. I will be with her for 2 weeks and look forward to each moment.

Being a mom! How absolutely blessed I am to have daughters that request spending time together. To have the depth of the relationships that we do. Gratitude beyond measure.

Once I return, the MSABC walk will be just a few weeks away. The overall goal for our walk is to raise $95,000. My personal goal is to raise $7,500 to match what we raised last year. I hope that you will consider supporting me once again this year.

I continue to feel passionate about making a difference as I promote Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Indian River County. Please consider supporting Team LIVE LIFE by donating, walking “with” us or by simply keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.

Gratitude and more gratitude,

XO

Elizabeth

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
