Making Strides of Brooklyn

Kabata Tatas

In March 2019 just days shy of my 33rd birthday I was diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). Although unfortunate this was very lucky as DCIS is considered a stage 0 breast cancer and some would even argue not a cancer at all.  Based on the size of my tomour my  medical team decided that a single mastectomy would be the best route, and I opted for a removing both breasts for piece of mind. Breast cancer is tricky and often times testing and imaging cannot give you the whole picture of what is going on inside. Post surgery my doctors did find that a piece of the tumour was in fact in stage 1. Surgery gave us great margins and no family history along with negative genetic testing meant I got off  "easy" and did not need any further treatment. The process did require two more surgeries, the reconstrucion aspect of the situation.

All in all it was very scary! I was a mom of two little kids and never thought that at only 32 I could have breast cancer. Life had a different plan. I had no history of this in my family and it was just a total and complete toss of a coin. I was lucky to have lots of support around me at this time, a great husband, an understanding boss, in laws and amazing freinds. Some are not as lucky to have such reasources. I walk for me, I walk for them, I walk for those who were not as lucky as I was. In hopes that my donation (with your help) aids in reaserch and medical treatment. Hope you join us for the walk or just find it in your heart to donate a little bit to help me reach my goal~

Even though we all have our own reasons for joining Making Strides, we'll take down breast cancer because we're in it together. Our team is fundraising for the American Cancer Society's support services and lifesaving research.

Believe us, every dollar really does count, so we're asking for your help. Please donate or join our team today, because together we can end breast cancer.

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
