Some of you may remember my family, "Team Saban" walks at Jones beach in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walkathon every fall. Our team slogan is BDS...still making a difference. We walk in memory of my mom Barbara Dawn Saban and with every dollar we raise BDS continues to make a difference.
This year I was reminded just how big of a difference she continues to make:
Every year we start our fundraising with a kickoff breakfast held at Crest Hollow Country Club. There's always an inspirational speaker and teams share fundraising ideas.
This year the speaker was the team leader of "Stacey's Warriors" and she shared her story of surviving breast cancer.
She spoke about when she was first diagnosed. All she could think about was living to see her two young sons grow up to be men. She spoke about how her doctor at Sloan Kettering was involved in cutting edge research which was supported by our fundraising efforts. There wasn't a dry eye in the house when she shared that one of her sons is now doing his oncology internship at Sloan Kettering.
I, however, started crying way earlier than anyone else in the room...
As she told her story I realized her doctor was the same doctor my mom had gone to many years before. The doctor where she went to participate in clinical trials that helped move cancer research forward. The same research that helps save lives everyday, maybe even Stacey's life.
That research is funded by The American Cancer Society and events like the Making Strides Walkathon.
