Making Strides of Providence

CycleBar Providence Making Strides

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us and many of our CBPVD Riders and their families.  I invite you to read my own personal life story below (Lisa O'Rourke).  I have a long family history of both breast and ovarian cancer.  If it weren't for the incredible research I would not have have the advanced knowledge that I am BRCA2 positive and I would not have been afforded the ability to make the life saving decisions, which added years to my life.

We want to help and are hosting a CycleGiving Ride at CycleBar Providence!

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It's helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. We ask that you kindly share our page with your family and friends and join us for our 7th Annual Making Strides Ride at CycleBar Providence on October 20, 2024 at 11:00AM.  A link to our ride will be sent in a separate email.  Bikes will go fast, so be sure to sign up today!  If you can't ride with us, we will miss you, but you can still donate on our page to this awesome cause.

Thank you!

Why I am Making Strides by Lisa O'Rourke

When my mom was just 9 years old her mother passed away from what we believe was Ovarian Cancer. In the late 80s my mom's sister passed away from breast cancer.  In 1990 my mom was was diagnosed with breast cancer and tested positive for the BRCA2 gene.  I was finishing up my freshmen year in college and just 19 years old at the time.  This gene can be hereditary and the likelihood of passing it along to your children is 50%.  Someone who carries this gene has an increased risk of developing both breast cancer and ovarian cancer and the risk continues to increase as you age.  In fact, it goes up to 85% by age 70!

I decided not to get tested right away and therefore I was put into a high risk population at age 19. Therefore, I would be seen by doctors at least 6 times a year or more where I would receive false positive results and / or a need for procedures for additional biopsies.

In 2013 at the age of 42 I was strongly encouraged to get tested, which I did.  The results came back positive.  For some odd reason this was not a surprise to me.  I had always kind of thought it would happen to me and I was prepared for what I knew I would do next.

In January 2014 I had a Bi-lateral Salpingo-oophorectomy, which is a fancy word for removal of my tubes and ovaries.  3 weeks later I had a bilateral mastectomy and the start of my reconstruction process.  The recovery was long and difficult and full of complications.  I went on to have an additional 3 surgeries over the following 2 years.

Although this was a traumatic event for me and my family, I feel I am a much stronger person for it.  Everything which has happened over these past few years has given me a new perspective on the meaning of life, family and surrounding myself with positive people each and every day.  This is my WHY for CycleBar PVD.  If you ever looked at my wrist you will notice 2 bracelets which Pat and the girls gave to me when we were going through our hard times.  One says “Everything happens for a reason” and the other says “Thankful and Grateful”.  I had to go through all of this in order to be where I am today and I will forever be thankful and grateful for everyone in my life who have continuously supported me and my family, especially during these tough times.

I am so incredibly fortunate to have been blessed with an awesome team and extended family with our CBPVD Tribe.

I will forever be changed by this gene and forever be worried for my two daughters, who both unfortunately each have a 50% risk of inheriting the same awful gene.  This is what makes the Making Strides Event so important to Pat, my girls and myself.  Without advanced cancer research there would not have been a test to detect this gene and I would not have been able to be proactive in my healthcare decision.  I would love nothing more than to have our entire CBPVD Team, Rider Community, family and friends participate in the charity ride at CBPVD on October 20, 2024 at 11:00AM and join us!

Thank you all again for being a part of our extended family!

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
