LISA'S STORY"Breast cancer doesn't discriminate," my breast surgeon compassionately shared, as I sat stunned, in disbelief. CANCER! ME?! WHY?! After all, I was a former college athlete and military veteran who served in Afghanistan, the picture of health and toughness. Until...I wasn't. I had started feeling a tiredness in my body that was different from the grind I’d become accustomed to as a divorced working mom. I was about to give up on finding answers when a breast cancer survivor bravely shared her story with me. Inspired, I pushed for a mammogram despite being "low risk." I was 36 years old with no family history but an intuition that symptoms I had been experiencing were something more. It turned out they were. My HER2+ breast cancer was so extensive and aggressive that despite my early diagnosis I had to undergo a mastectomy and a regimen of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Now, six years later, I’m honored to be a 2024 Chicago Portraits of Hope Ambassador for Making Strides. I’m committed to using this platform as an opportunity to share my story with the hope of saving lives, just as mine was saved.I’d like to dedicate my campaign to two special guardian angels: - Flora, the friend who saved my life by sharing her story and who stood by me during the twists and turns of treatment, and - Debbie Harris, my late mother-in-law and courageous breast cancer warrior whose infectious positivity, unwavering faith, and commitment to serving others inspired all those around her
