Strides RewardsSlaying For Bernadette
For My Momma, Bernadette Philbin!
This one’s for you, mom. In October 2017 at 59 years old, my mom, Bernadette Philbin, was diagnosed with Stage 0 Breast Cancer the night before she was set to have a lumpectomy. She was treated with a "chemotherapy-type pill" and 20+ rounds of radiation. She was free and clear of the cancer after those treatments; or so we thought. She continued to visit her breast surgeon for follow-up visits and in 2021, he brought a swelling in her chest to her attention. Many tests later, my mom was once again, diagnosed with breast cancer. This time, it was a different and more aggressive form. Already at Stage III, she immediately had to pursue chemotherapy. She had 8 rounds of chemo before she opted for a double mastectomy on March 30th, 2022. After continuing treatment with an additional 30+ rounds of radiation, Bernadette was deemed "cancer free" by her doctors and medical team. She then moved down to Tampa, Florida, from Long Island, New York, with my dad, Michael, in August of 2022. She followed up with an oncology team at a reputable and well-renowned cancer center here in Tampa. They monitored her closely. And after pursuing more testing in 2023, mom was once again diagnosed with Stage IV Triple Negative Breast Cancer on her 41st Wedding Anniversary - October 30th, 2023. Once again she started going for chemotherapy treatments. Being the resilient woman she is, mom continued to hold her head high (hair loss and all) and trudge through the chemo...until it came to a screeching halt in December of 2023 because of an unhealed burn wound from the radiation of 2022 that was getting exceedingly worse. The medical team advised she have a wound vac to help expedite the healing process, which she had for a good month or so, before visiting a plastic surgeon for a consult to have skin grafting surgery. This inevitably took place on March 7th, 2024. Though it took some time, mom has since continued to heal from this surgery, and returned to chemotherapy the beginning of May. She was recently informed by her healthcare providers that she will need to continue these treatments indefinitely. As her oldest daughter, I, Erin, am starting up a team with my sister, Tara, to patricipate in the Making Strides Walk here in Tampa on Saturday, October 26th, 2024. We as a family are asking you to please consider a donation for my mom, Bernadette, and behalf of all of the resilient fighters and survivors everywhere. Slay girl, SLAY!

Thank you for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.
As of January 2022, we have invested $71 M for potentially lifesaving breast cancer specific research grants.
We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021
Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer.

Strides RewardsThis isn’t what I wanted.
Welcome to our Team Page. We've formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.
There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.
How We Support the American Cancer Society
Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
