Love Somjit

Our Mom

Somjit was born in 1962 in Vientiane, Laos. At the young age of fourteen she and two of her aunts were awakened in the middle of the night by communist soldiers at gunpoint and was taken to a prison  and labor camp that also served as a reeducation camp. Her only crime was belonging to a family that supported democracy. At the age of 18 after years in a Thai refugee camp, she immigrated to the United States of America where she met my father and had my three siblings and I. She has dedicated her life to giving us a fighting chance to fulfill all our dreams. I am a Spanish instructor at a community college while my siblings have acquired their masters degree, served in the U.S. Navy and raised our young niece. In August of 2018, my mother was diagnosed with brain tumors. Tests revealed that her cancer began in her lungs and had metasticized to her brain causing large brain tumors. She was already stage 4 cancer when she was diagnosed. The doctor sat me down and told me she had 2-3 months if she didn't immediately go into brain surgery to remove the largest tumor in her left parietal lobe. After three brain surgeries she is now in a wheel chair and has difficulty moving. This strong woman who despite financial hardships and abuse, stood strong in order to give my siblings and I life, is now hanging on to hers. Each day she is getting stronger again and she gives me hope that when we stand up and fight, we truly see what we are made of. I see that my mom is one of the strongest women I know and I would like you to join me in raising money for research and this amazing cause. Let's beat cancer together! Please I humbly ask that you support my team by donating, volunteering and/or signing up to walk with me on November 02, 2019 at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Thank you. Khop jai which from Lao translates to "Thank you".

How We Relay

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We’ll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we’ll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we’ll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
