Why We Relay

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We’ll spend the next few months fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we’ll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

For most of you that know me, knew my mother Nancy Gouker. During the summer of 1999, she was first diagnosed with Melanoma. This was a shock to my sisters, father and myself.  My mom is a fighter and characteristic of how she was in all aspects of her life she kicked cancer's behind and was in remission within months.   Big Nance (a nickname she openly hated but secretly we all knew she loved it) never let this define her and used every opportunity to spend time with dad, spoil her grandchildren, and be the best mom to me, my sisters, and so many others.  In February 2018 she became ill with what seemed to be the flu with a bad cough but turned out to be Melanoma in her lung.  The cancer was aggressive but again characteristic of mom, she was more concerned with how Dad and us kids were handling the news and staying optimisitic.  Mom fought hard but unfortunately the cancer spread quickly and on June 29 she passed away.  She was a loving mother, beautiful wife, caring grandmother, cheerful friend, and mother to many kids that weren't hers but she considered her own.  We were all blessed to have her in our lives and we carry her with us every day.  My nephew said it perfectly the day she passed away when he was told the news - "Mamaw is an angel now."

I strongly believe, and think I speak for everyone who ever met mom, that she was the greatest person to ever live and has left a void in all of our lives that we are working to handle.  A few days after mom passed my sisters, dad and I went to the 2018 Hanover Relay for Life event because Faith.Action.Victory, a team that knew our family, lit a luminaria in memory of mom.  In a time of pain and healing for our family, this small gesture meant the world to us and gave us a chance to feel like we were carrying on mom's memory in a positive way - a way she would have wanted.  We are continuing her legacy with this team of her loved ones to continue her fight and celebrate every wonderful thing she brought to our lives.

Our family invites you to join us on her team and raise money to fight an ugly disease.  If you cannot join on us for the relay event, please know that any contribution or action in support of this team helps and we greatly appreciate it.  Together, we’ll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
