Team Reason to Relay

Most people never really stop and think about what the news articles say about cancer. Many never take a step back and realize how much it has become a part of our society; how almost every single person today can mention at least one person they know who has or had cancer. These past few years has certainly made us take a step back and take it all in.

Russ lost his best friend, Jim Smith, after a long valiant fight with cancer; we were taken aback by a sudden loss of one of  Russ’s sisters, Pam Engle, only weeks after being diagnosed; and finally, Billy (Son, Brother, Uncle) finally left us after stretching a six month diagnosis into a full two years.

In a way, our motivation to participate in Relay for Life stems from all of the losses we have had this past few years, as well as the losses of a father-in-law, uncle, and grandmother in the past; however it all really started with, Billy.

Billy was the kind of person you couldn’t help but get along with. He made friends wherever he went. So it was a huge blow when we found out in August of 2010, at the age of 43, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. All we could think about initially was how could something like this happen to someone like him? It wasn’t fair.

After the initial shock of the diagnosis dissipated, Billy decided he wasn’t just going to sit around and do nothing; he was going to tough it out and get as much time as he could out of the situation. Billy started an initial regiment of chemo treatments and by January 2011, doctors were pleasantly surprised how well things were going. Billy wasn’t cured, but he was in high spirits and was fighting back better than the doctors thought he could.

With continued treatments, things stayed this way for another year, until January 2012 when the doctors saw that the treatments were losing their effectiveness. Thankfully, in the last nine months Billy had the chance to experience some special moments, like watching one of his nieces get married and watching his beloved Raven win their first season game with his family. When we think about that, we can only have Happy Thoughts about Billy. Even when he was going through tough patches for the two years, Karen and Lory would only have to tell him “think Happy Thoughts”, and he would perk back up and shoot us a big smile.

We invite you to come join the Happy Thoughts team on June 1, 2019. Spend some time and share some smiles with everyone at Relay for Life as we come together to celebrate the lives of those who have lost their fight and cheer on those who are still working on winning theirs. We also encourage you to make a donation to team Happy Thoughts in the hopes that someday soon; nobody will have a fight to loose.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
