A Message from Team Captain Alana
This is my third Relay with GW, but I’ve been participating in my hometown’s Relay since I was in middle school. Relay is my favorite day of the year because to me it symbolizes a community event built on love and loss, strength and survivorship. So far, four people in my life have been diagnosed with cancer. I almost said “four people in my life have been touched by cancer”, but in reality, cancer has touched us all. Everyone knows someone, is someone, or if you’re really lucky, knows someone who knows someone, who has or has had cancer, and no matter whether that person is still fighting, went into remission or passed away, cancer has had some negative impact on you, on everyone, on society as a whole. For me, it’s been two of my grandparents, my father, and a woman who touched my life in a way I’m not sure even I understand. No one is safe from this monster until a cure is found, and that’s what the American Cancer Society works toward through Relay for Life, and what we do at GW through Relay for Life. For me, Relay is a fun and gratifying way to give back to the community and work to end this disease in all its forms. It’s always such a good time and I hope to see you there!

HOW FUNDRAISING IMPACTS YOUR COMMUNITY

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

$410 million as of
august 2018

Funding potentially lifesaving cancer research grants.

1.34 million in 2017

Calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support.

Nearly
452 thousand in 2017

Nights of free lodging provided to patients at Hope Lodge® communities.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
