Why We Formed a Relay For Life Fundraising Team

Penny was first diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 2005, and resolved to fight back. She underwent chemotherapy, radiation thereapy and a radical mastectomy that year. She responded well to the estrogen-based chemotherapy, so we had high hopes at first.  "Fighting back" also meant signing up with Relay For Life.  For Penny, the children always came first.  In 2007, Penny had more surgery to prevent the cancer from coming back and another mastectomy by the end of the year, but early the following year of 2008 the cancer had returned.

That didn't stop her, though, at least not until early in 2009, when Chris Miles had to take over at SOS when they both realized Penny would not be returning to work.  "Mommy, will you die?" was asked many times and always answered "NO!".  However, reality didn't match our hopes and on April Fools day 2009, Penny passed away silently in the early morning.  Penny kept up the fight until the very last moment and is an inspiration to her family and friends.

What Penny left behind was a legacy that will endure along with the friendships, including the SOS Resource Center and its rain garden, the VOWS recycling program, the SOS Chances program, and many more.

I will conclude with some words by Penny herself when she chaired Relay for Life in 2008.

"I'm honored to be here, because I'm here.  Some of us are no, and it is difficult to be one of the lucky ones.  Survivor guilt is real...Why does my family get to 'celebrate,' while her family only gets to 'remember'?  Well, we don't have those answers, but I do know this one thing:  Together we can 'fight back.'  I am honored to invite you all to come out and join us to help us Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.   Let's commit again to make this years Relay for Life a big success and in years to come, kids won't ask, 'Mommy, will you die?' but instead say, 'Mommy, I read in my history book about this disease called cancer.  What is that?' "

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
