Michael Berman's Warriors

Why We Relay

We relay for our hero, my dad, Michael Joseph Berman. He was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in November of 2015. Four days before my 21st birthday. He received a brain surgery to suck as much as the tumor out as possible on. He then went on to do 6 weeks of radiation at Inova Fairfax hospital as well as an experimental drug trial at John’s Hopkins in Baltimore. The countless treatments, rides to the hospitals, support of family and friends during that time means the world and more to the Berman family. Summer of 2016 was the best. He was in good health and we had such a fun few months. In September my dad got an MRI and that nasty tumor was back. After 7 months of clear scans. He received one brain surgery and another one a week later to get air out of his ear canal. This resulted in him being in the ICU for an extended amount of time as well as having to go to rehab to learn to use his muscles again, walk again, learn to reuse his brain. I saw my Superman, my Batman, my hero deteriorating before my eyes. October and November were hard. When he couldn’t come on our Thanksgiving family vacation I knew things were not looking good. I took my finals from home December 2016. We had an incredible family gathering for the holidays. I went on Birthright Israel and came home to my mom saying he was back in Inova Fair Oaks. I wasn’t sure why so I went straight there. Unfortunately, his immune system was so weak he had sepsis and his organs were beginning to fail. My dad could no longer walk upstairs in our home and as a family we had to accept it and be strong for him and continue to be strong every single day. My dad lost his fight with Glioblastoma on January 19th 2017. Without Relay For Life, without brain cancer research and without the support of my enormous family and friends I would not be writing this to the public today. I am so BLESSED to have had 22 amazing years with Michael Berman and no one in the future should have to go through what we went through. Please with your open hearts donate as much or as little as you can. This is why I relay.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
