thyROID RAGE

Having cancer is something you sympathize with and never expect to empathize. For those of you who don’t know, I was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma 2 weeks before going off to college. A lot of things in life are changing right now — adjusting to online school, leaving home, saying goodbye to friends and making new ones— so finding out I have this disease was difficult news to receive.

The word “cancer” carries a lot of weight with it, so here are some quick facts about Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma. It’s a cancerous tumor located within the thyroid gland, and in my case, it spread to some of my lymph nodes too. Additionally, it is most common in young people, women, and asian/white people (so i’m really just checking off all the boxes here lol).

I am so blessed that my doctor found it in stage 1. I am so blessed that I will be able to go on with life as normal a couple weeks post-op. I am so blessed to be surrounded by such supportive people. Most of all, I am so blessed to have my mom, dad, and sister + Ian to make this process a lot easier and make me feel less alone. While my cancer is relatively easy to take care of, it is something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life. While it will be tough at first, I am sure that dealing with my cancer will become easier day by day.

My experience with cancer treatment has been so easy, painless, and supportive, but not everyone is as fortunate as me. That is why I am asking you to donate to my Relay for Life, join my team if you are here at Virginia Tech, or support your local Relay for Life/American Cancer Society in any way you can. That money will be going towards cancer detection/treatment, survivor support, cancer prevention and education, and so much more. Together, we can take a big step towards a future in which everyone's diagnosed with cancer has an experience as easy as mine. Together, we can take a step towards a future in which cancer is a thing of the past.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
