Breast Friends

This is my second bout with breast cancer. In 2010 it was HER2 positive, stage one on the left side. I had a lumpectomy, 6 weeks of radiation and 8 years of tamoxifen. Everything was good. In 2020 I had a routine mammogram during COVID. On the right side was found triple negative breast cancer stage 2b. Cancer is scary. Cancer during COVID? Petrifying! You have to go to all your appointments and chemo treatments by yourself. I had a port placed and started chemo a month after diagnosis.  After 2 blood transfusions, one ambulance ride, one overnight hospital stay and 5 months of chemo, I had a lumpectomy.  Chemo was a complete success!  After a month of recovery, I am finishing 30 rounds of radiation. My body has been ravaged by cancer.  I now have 2 lymph node scars, 2 lumpectomy scars, 2 port scars. I’ve lost my hair, Ive lost 30lbs.  My skin is dry and brittle. I run out of breath easily. I wear a compression sleeve to ward of lymphedema. I’ve become diabetic due to chemo. I have neuropathy in my fingers and feet that may never get better.
This is what cancer looks like.  It’s not pretty.  It doesn’t discriminate.  It doesn’t matter what your history is, what your color is, what your age is.  Doesn’t matter if you are a mother, a sister, a daughter, a wife. Once you get it, it never goes away.  Even with a clean bill of health, it’s always lurking in the back of your mind that it could come back.  There is always another scan, another blood test, another doctors appointment.
This is breast cancer.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
