Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley

Avast, there!

Being a pirate is a fun and care-free life (besides avoiding cannonballs whistlin' overhead and seagulls doin' unsightly things to me ship's brand new paint job, o' course). HOWEVER! We adventurers of the sea spend many a long blazin' day under the rays of our beautious sun, and from that hot ball of UV rays we need protection!

Let me take a look-see in me olde book o' facts for a moment here. Let's see, now.. hm... a-ha! Here it is. Mellay... meelow-melon gnome... Arr! See if you can pronounce this for me:

mel\a\no\ma [mel-uh-NOH-muh]

A type of skin cancer which forms from melanocytes (pigment-containing cells in the skin).

Now, that there is just a bunch of fancy words I don't quite understand meself, but the basic jist that's been told to me is that melon gnomes are one nasty cancer that we pirates don’t want!

It says here that over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. It also says:

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.

About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns.

These here facts were taken straight from www.skincancer.org.

So, to protect our skin from the harmful UVB rays of the sun and the melon gnomes it produces, we slap on as much sunscreen as we can.

And not just once a day, mind ye! We salty old pirates work hard out on our vessel and all o' our hard earned sunscreen wears right off. So don't be forgettin' to reapply at least every 2 hours!

Skin cancer, as with all cancers, should not be taken lightly. That be why, as a pirate, my mission is to tell all ye scalawags to be sure an' wear sunscreen, especially on those hot summer days! You'll avoid that old beast known as sun burn as well! Do you know what salt water can do to a sunburn? Me timbers be shiverin' at the mere thought.

Stay protected out there, mateys!
