Relay For Life of Sacramento County

Lou's Crew

CANCER SUCKS!!!  Ya I said it!  Cancer Sucks!  Do I have your attention?  What am I gonna do about it?  On Saturday, September 14th at from 12pm-9pm, my family and I will be participating in the Relay For Life of Sacramento County, being held at Orangevale Community Park, 7301 Filbert Ave., Orangevale, CA.

What is the Relay For Life?  Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser cancer walk for the American Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries who give of their time and effort because they believe it's time to take action against cancer.

Relay For Life began in the USA in May 1985 when colorectal surgeon, Dr. Gordy Klatt, wanted to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. Dr. Klatt circled the track for a total of more than 83 miles at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for 24 hours. Friends and family donated $25 to run or walk certain lengths with him. That year, he raised $27,000. While he ran, nearly 300 friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the track. Since then, Relay For Life has become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world.

Why do I Relay?  According to the American Cancer Society, men have a 39.66 percent probability, or approximately a one in three risk, of developing cancer in their lifetime. For women, the odds are slightly lower, at 37.65 percent.  So that means that if you are hanging out with a couple of family members or friends, 1 in 3 of you will get cancer.  That's just absurd.  One of my good hockey buddies is currently battling prostate cancer.  He recently had surgery and is recovering well.  Two good friends are currently battling cancer.  They are both going through treatments now.  (Their names withheld during their battle).

Relay in support of all their battles.  I have family members and friends that are survivors and beat cancer.  (Stryker, Deanna, Joanetta, Wooster, Diana, Debbie, Michael, Vic, Eileen, Pete, and Janis, just to name a few).  I Relay in honor of them.  And unfortunately, there are those that lost their battle to cancer, including my father 10 years ago, my uncle Marvin several months later, my father in law Bob and my brother in law Rodney, and my hockey buddy Jonathan lost his wife Midori.   And 4 years ago, we all lost MaryLou, my mother-in-law (hence the team name "Lou's Crew").  And more recently, we all lost Uncle Jerry to cancer.  I Relay in memory of them all.

And of course, I Relay in honor of the love of my life Monique who is a 16 year survivor of breast cancer.  I am truly grateful for her, and believe she won her battle so that she could continue the fight against cancer until there is a cure.

So how can you help?  Relay is made up of teams that walk laps on a track.  You can join a team and participate.   Lou's Crew comes to mind.  Or, you can donate money (see link below).   Also, our event is looking for Sponsors.  I can email you a sponsor form or there is a link available on this website.

When we walk together, we are bigger than cancer.  Lou's Crew will walk all day so that someone else may walk another day. Here’s to lack of sleep, blistered feet, and telling cancer we won’t be beat. Each lap gets us closer to a world with more birthdays. Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

Much Love,  Ray your event Logistics Guy, and Team Captain for Lou's Crew

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $400 M for potentially lifesaving cancer research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
