Relay For Life of Lake County

Purple Buckeyes

My father, Greg Forbes, was 57 years old when he ended his brave battle with pancreatic cancer in November 2021.  He was a kind and selfless man who always put the needs of others before his own.  He loved to have fun, especially in Columbus at his famous tailgate for Ohio State games.  He was known for his cooking skills, a good conversation over a few Bud Light's, and a strong work ethic.  Greg was a proud man, and fiercely loved his family.  Everything changed when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer on October 7th, 2020.  Constant appointments at the hospital, chemotherapy (need I say more), and the looming,  fear of the unknown that was our family's future.  My mother and I became his full-time caregivers, ensuring him the best care we could possibly provide him throughout his battle.  It was the hardest thing I have ever endured.  My father, mother, brother and I all were tested as a family in more ways than one, never once letting it break us.

Within a year of his diagnosis, fighting every step of the way with an optimisic outlook, he lost to his enemy.  Cancer is wretched.  Cancer is cruel.  Cancer is unfair. But I refuse to allow the loss of my father -  to CANCER -  win.  I created Purple Buckeyes in my father's honor, as well as to raise more awareness regarding pancreatic cancer and remind people to be mindful of their health and family history.  Every step, every dollar could help another family that was once in my position.  I want them to know that they are not alone, that awareness is being raised, that there are people out there searching for a cure, and the Purple Buckeyes are there to help.

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $400 M for potentially lifesaving cancer research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
