CMS-SOAR Like Eagles: Teachers Fighting Cancer

Cancer has affected too many people I love. That's why I've joined Relay For Life to celebrate survivors, remember those we've lost, and offer up support to anyone in our community who's been affected by it. I lost my mother to pancreatic cancer in 2015, after only being diagnosed three weeks earlier. Then, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. It was a hard year, especially with the Covid pandemic going on simultaneously. After I finished active treatment, it was time for a change. I accepted a new position, teaching in a different middle school in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. After 15 years as a Language Arts teacher in middle school, I have had every type of experience with a co-teacher. This is a close relationship which can be amazing, or it can be a daily struggle. I lucked out. Heather was my co-teacher that year, and she was and IS a superstar! Heather was fighting her own battle that year, caring for her infant daughter, Sophia. Sophia was born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) and was hospitalized for most of the year and is still on the heart transplant list. As if that wasn't enough, Heather was diagnosed with the same type of breast cancer I have in 2023. Incredibly, we met for a reason, and we share the same struggles. We are both still teaching our middle school Language Arts classes daily in AACPS, though we do not work together anymore. We are both still in treatment for Triple Positive (Er+Pr+HER2+) breast cancer, and have several more years of surgeries, medications and the fear of the unknown ahead of us. We are here to fight together, will you join us? The funds I'm raising will sustain critical research and provide services for people trying to cope with their cancer experience. Believe me, every dollar really does count, so I'm asking you to please donate today.
