Relay For Life of Linn County

Gary's Gang

When asked, almost all of us can say that we know someone who has been touched by cancer (the statistics are 1 out of every 2 men and 1 out of every 3 women).  The statistics bear this out: more than 600,000 people from across the United States and more than 6,300 Iowans died from cancer in 2022; over 1.9 million people in the United States and more than 20,000 of people in Iowa first heard the dreaded words “You have cancer” in the past 12 months, I am not a doctor or a research scientist so that the only way I can actually do something about the human side of these numbers is through volunteering for and financially supporting the work of the American Cancer Society.

Helping fund the research and education programs of the American Cancer Society is a tangible way to save lives and prevent deaths from cancer.  The American Cancer Society continues to be the largest source of private cancer research funding in the United States.  The clear, evidence-based information on cancer diagnosis and treatment is available to everyone at no cost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Each year, hundreds of thousands of people dealing with cancer or their families or friends or caregivers can dial 1-800-ACS-2345 any time of the day or night and reach a trained social worker who can respond to their questions or just be a friendly, supportive voice.  The decline in cancer mortality rates for the past several years has been significant and is due, in no small part, to the education and research work of the American Cancer Society to reach its vision to “end cancer as we know it, for everyone.”

I am taking a different path this year, so to speak.  Rather than walking the track at Washington High School, this year I will be walking from Prairie High School to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Iowa City on Saturday, June 17, to celebrate those who are living with cancer and to give tribute to those who have succumbed to this horrible disease.  I will also be celebrating my wife’s 16 years of survivorship and my 6 years. The Hope Lodge provides free lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers while undergoing treatment at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.  I will be dedicating 10% of the funds I raise to support this important resource.

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

As of January 2022, we have invested $400 M for potentially lifesaving cancer research grants.

We have received over 250,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2021

Cancer patients benefited from ACS transportation support through our Road TO Recovery program and transportation grants in 2021, with nearly 229,000 rides provided.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
