Ups and Downs
Team Ups and Downs - was created due to my diagnoses fourteen years ago. At the age of 45, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer with two very young children ages 5 and 2. This changed our lives dramatically especially with a repeat diagnosis two years later. The hospital visits, the chemo treatments, radiation, and a lifestyle changing surgery continue to remind me daily of the impact to not acting quickly or asking questions. I struggled both times with after surgery complications with the second diagnosis causing me to be hospitalized for over 30 days. Luckily, with the support of my husband, family and friends, my kids were taken care of and loved. But to this day, the impact of this disease creeps into my kids minds frequently.
Recently, a friend passed away from Cancer at the age of 52 leaving behind two children, the same ages as mine. She was an amazing person who radiated positivity and kindness in every interaction. Her battle was short but courageous. She leaves behind a legacy that I hope to never forget. I will participate this year also in her honor as she was there to help celebrate with my many years ago.
My team, comprised of family and friends, have been doing this Relay Event for over 10 years. I would not be where I am today, if it was not for this great group of supporters that have carried forward, picked me up when I was down and truly help to celebrate my survival. We relay to raise awareness, to celebrate our many families and friends that have been inflicted with this disease and to also remember the many that have lost their battle but impacted our lives with their beautiful spirit and souls. Our team’s name - Ups and Downs represents the journey of Cancer and how the good days (Ups) are to be celebrated and appreciated while the difficult days (Downs, plus my last name) are to show that your network of support and love will always be with you. Relay for Life - is a true depiction of the journey you undertake when you are diagnosed with Cancer and we will walk because we can and we care to help others, any way we can, but more important, to raise awareness to be vigilant, ask questions and advocate for yourself and loved ones.

Thank you for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.
Since 1991 we have invested $3.43 billion in cancer research.
We have received over 360,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2023.
Cancer patients benefited from the ACS transportation support through our Road To Recovery program and transportation grants in 2023, with nearly 769,000 rides provided.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors for fueling the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.

This isn’t what I wanted.
Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.
Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
