Lighting the Way for Childhood Cancer Warriors

When I was a child, I faced one of the toughest battles imaginable: a cancer diagnosis. My journey began just seven months after my sister’s battle with kidney cancer started. On May 17, 2000, just five days after her third birthday, my sister was diagnosed with Wilms tumor, a kidney cancer, in her right kidney. Seven months later to the day, on December 17th, I was diagnosed with the same cancer in my left kidney at just six years old. The odds of this happening were less than 1-2%, making our family’s experience extraordinarily rare.

Those years taught us the meaning of strength, the importance of family, and the value of every precious moment. As childhood cancer warriors, my sister and I learned to shine through the darkest of times, finding light even when the path seemed uncertain.

The light of hope, however, isn’t always enough to save everyone. My friend Christina, a bright and beautiful soul, lost her battle with leukemia. She was my neighbor in the hospital and we instantly became best friends. Christina’s laughter, kindness, and courage continue to inspire me every day. Her legacy fuels my passion to ensure that others have a fighting chance—to find cures, to support families, and to light the way for those still fighting.

Now, as part of Relay for Life, I’ve found a way to bring my journey full circle with the American Cancer Society. Through Team Lighting the Way for Childhood Cancer Warriors, I honor my childhood battle, my sister’s strength, and Christina’s memory. Each luminaria bag represents not just a name, but a story—a shared commitment to keep the light of hope alive. Together, for the 2024 Relay for Life Racine event, we’re betting on a cure and shining bright in the fight against cancer.

Join us as we walk, remember, and fight back. With every step, every dollar, and every shared moment, we’re lighting the way toward a world free from cancer.

How Fundraising Impacts Your Community

Cancer hits far too close to home, so the funds you raise will help do the same. Through services and resources like free rides to chemo, free places to stay near hospitals, and a live 24/7 helpline, cancer patients and their families will feel the love. Here’s how recent money raised has been put to incredible uses.

Since 1991 we have invested $3.43 billion in cancer research.

We have received over 360,000 calls and chats from patients and caregivers seeking support in 2023.

Cancer patients benefited from the ACS transportation support through our Road To Recovery program and transportation grants in 2023, with nearly 769,000 rides provided.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We'll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we'll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

Together, we'll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
